Leaves of loose metal leaf are placed onto a continuous length of of lightweight paper with slight overlaps. Unlike patent leaf which is pressed onto the paper, ribbon leaf is adhered with small traces of wax during the rolling process. Metal ribbon leaf is intended for use with oil or synthetic sizes on flat surfaces and like patent leaf does not work well on heavily carved or textured surfaces. When finished the end result is a master roll that is 6 1/4" wide, in lengths of 5 meters (16.4 feet) 50 meters (164 feet) or 75 meters (246 feet). These 50-75 meter master rolls can be put on a lathe like machine that can cut the rolls to various widths from 3/8" to 6' widths (or you can use the whole 6 1/4" master roll for which there are no cutting charges). The 5 meter rolls are too thin to fit on the cutting machine so they are only available in master rolls.
Metal Ribbon Leaf is sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity and needs to be stored properly. The leaf may become loose on the paper if stored in a dry, warm environment. If the leaf was stored in a very hot humid environment, the leaf may adhere too tightly to the paper. Store metal ribbon leaf at normal room temperature and humidity. To prevent humidity from fluctuation during extended storage, wrap the roll in plastic wrap or use a resealable plastic bag.
